Selmer S 80 Throat Inserts- Back in the seventies, when Selmer first came out with the S 80 mouthpieces, we used to say they got a square sound like their square chambers. The sharp angles in the throat and do make the S 80 brighter, almost more of a bebop than classical mouthpiece. If you're not happy with your S 80, you can now say good-bye to the square sound forever!
These inserts can turn the throat back into the older traditional "horseshoe" (inverted U) shaped chamber of the old Selmer scroll mouthpieces or even the round chamber of the Teal with surprising results. The U shaped insert makes the sound richer, fuller, and deeper, more like an older scroll Selmer. By reducing the highs from the sound but yet leaving the mids, the U throat brings out the color in the sound. The round shaped insert gives a much purer, darker sound like the Teal mouthpieces by Selmer. The slight extra resistance of the round Teal inserts also adds fulness to the upper register. The beveled face gives a livelier sound while the concave face has more fulness and body. For those that want to use their S 80 for jazz, the RR inserts have a larger opening and add a little more edge to the S 80 sound.

Order S 80 Throat Inserts Now Large Chamber Throat Inserts There are many players using large double- chambered mouthpieces that are looking for a bit more power and focus. These mouthpieces include hard rubber Meyers, Otto Links, Berg 2 and 3 chambers, and Couf Artists. Some metal examples are Link Super Tone Masters, Berg 2 and 3 chambers, and Lawton P and D pieces. Throat inserts change these pieces into a more typical double-chambered mouthpiece design with the expected gain in focus and power. For those looking for a little extra something in their sound without a major change in feel or playability, these inserts could be the perfect solution.
The horseshoe shaped insert adds focus, ring, and a solider core without a large change in tone. The round insert adds more focus, power, and brightness. The beveled face adds a bit more edge with while the concave face adds more body. The amount of brightness gained will vary depending on the player, reed, and especially horn.

The baffle is the inside part of the mouthpiece directly across from (above) the reed. Saxophone players have known for a long time that a higher baffle (closer to the reed) gives more power, projection, and usually edge. Many players throughout the years have made their baffles higher by using things like beeswax, epoxy, and even carved up reeds. Making the baffle higher was a good way to add some zing while keeping the more traditional sound and feel.
Now, by using precision machined Plexiglas with custom fitted and shaped bumpers on the side, we have created a wedge insert that is not only removable but is also adjustable, both in height and in closeness to the tip. This allows the artist to get many different sounds out of the same mouthpiece. No more having to change mouthpieces for different playing situations. Wedges are available in a variety of different shapes, thicknesses, tip shapes, lengths, and even finishes to give exactly the sound and feel desired.
Wedge Options: 1) Shape: Wedges can be flat or concave. Flat wedges boost power without adding a lot of brightness. Concave wedges add even more power and a little more brightness than a flat wedge.
2) Thickness: Wedges come in three thicknesses, approximately .1", .2", and .3". The advantage of a thinner wedge is that it can be raised to the height of a thicker wedge but can also be put lower for a smaller power boost, giving more sound options. The advantage of a thicker wedge is that it is a little easier to put a wedge in exactly the same spot every time if it is resting against the mouthpiece baffle. Note that the .3" wedge is very thick in an alto mouthpiece and doesn't really leave any room for making adjustnments.
3) Tip Shape: Wedges can be made with a straight or rounded tip. The straight tip gives a bit more power but also adds more resistance, which keeps the sound darker and fuller. A rounded tip is a little less powerful but it is more free blowing and adds a bit more life and brightness.
4) Length: Wedges come in two different lengths for each sax. The medium length adds more brightness, is less resistant, and facilitates low note response. The long wedge is a bit less bright and more resistant. If you plan on moving the wedge away from the tip at times to lessen its effect, a medium length wedge will allow you more room for adjustments.
5) Bullet: A bullet is a V shaped groove cut at the back of a wedge. On a long wedge, this helps keep the resistance down and the low notes free while adding just a bit of brightness. Bulleting a medium wedge has much less of an effect, adding just a touch of brightness while reducing both resistance and power. For these reasons, we highly recommend bulleting a long wedge but not necessarily a medium length one.
6) Finish: Wedges come in three different surface textures, polished, unpolished, and coarse. The polished surface gives the smoothest and purest sound and is the darkest. The unpolished surface adds quite a bit more brightness to the sound, especially in the mid range. The coarse wedge is for those looking for a lot of grit in their sound.
There are two other wedge designs available. The Rollover wedge (pictured at left) is .1" thick and sits flat against the baffle. It is designed to give a good boost to power and response without adding resistance. The amount of brightness it adds depends on the design (see Wedge Ratings and Comments).
The reversible wedge can have a different shape and finish on each side, making it like two wedges in one simply by turning the wedge over. The only disadvantage is that, since there isn't a bottom side, it can't be tapered to fit the curve of the mouthpiece's baffle. Thus, a reversible wedge isn't quite as powerful and is more resistant than the same standard wedge. Putting a curved tip on a reversible wedge (pictured above) helps to alleviate the extra resistance somewhat. Either side is available in flat or concave with a polished, unpolished, or coarse finish. A .1" reversible wedge can have one rollover side but this will be a little more resistant than a normal Rollover wedge. A .1" reversible wedge may also be bulleted on one side, but the other side cannot be bulleted or rollover.
